Diabetes is India’s fastest growing lifestyle disease with 72 million cases recording 2018, with prevalence of staggering 10.4%. If we grow at this level it is estimated that every other person living will have diabetes by year 2040.The reason- food revolution and lifestyle changes.
Type II diabetes has a stronger genetic predisposition. However, having a gene itself is not enough to develop a disease. You inherit a predisposition to the disease, then something in your environment triggers it. If you have a family history of type 2 diabetes, it may be difficult to figure out whether your diabetes is due to lifestyle factors or genetic susceptibility. Most likely it is due to both.
However, it is possible to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes by changing the epigenetic factors, which is avoiding that environmental trigger.
Triggers you can potentially avoid are-
Unhealthy diet- food rich in refined carbohydrates. Three major dietary toxins that act as a trigger are cereal grains (especially refined flour), omega-6 industrial seed oils (corn, cottonseed, safflower, and soybean), and fructose (high-fructose in corn syrup).
- Lack of physical activity
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Exposure to entero-viruses (avoid eating at unhygienic places)
With proper care and guidance, there are ways to delay or prevent type II diabetes and enjoy good quality time with your sweet family…
