One Size Does Not Fit All – K&H Pioneers of Personalised Healthcare

Every individual is known for their unique attributes; as each one is built differently, something scientists and researchers have been emphasizing for years. Everybody reacts differently to foods and medications and are prone to different diseases. Being able to predict an individual’s risk for disease conditions and giving a personalized Preventive Healthcare plan is the need of the hour. It is extremely helpful in understanding one’s body better to achieve their future health goals.

Traditional Medical Care versus Preventive Health Care

Personalized Medicine is still a booming concept in India. Even today, individuals prefer traditional medicine practice, which broadly involves reactive management rather than proactive management. However, a rapid switch is being noticed to Preventive Healthcare; more and more people understand that “one size fits all” does not really work well.

Many of the severe health problems, people face in our society, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and arthritis, are influenced by multifactorial inheritance; which means that these conditions are influenced by a large number of genetic variants, lifestyle and by environmental factors. Also, food and medications that work for one individual might not work for another or might cause side effects. Hence, personalized medicine is essential to treat these disorders efficiently.

The contribution of one’s genes and their mutations, to the total risk of developing a specific disease or preventing it, is quite complex. An interplay of multiple genes and environmental factors play a key role. This is where the Polygenic Risk Score comes to play and helps in predicting the disease outcome and curating a precise preventive health care plan.

Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS) tells us:

· How a person is at risk in comparison to others, with the different genetic composition

· Likelihood of developing a disease condition and the chances of complications

· Create a strategy to prevent the disease and areas to focus on.

· The quantitative extent of risk by Polygenic Risk Scores can differ from individual to individual based on ancestral groups.

We can conclude by saying that a Polygenic Risk Score explains the relative risk of developing a disease as the data used for generating a PRS comes from large scale genomic studies.

However, PRS by itself is not a predictor of anything. PRS needs to be compared with the current health profile of an individual to get meaningful insights.

We at K&H Clinic have created a unique health scoring system which combines PRS and health profiling score (Considers over 300 data points pertaining to an individual’s health). This precise and measurable model to assess your health gives what we call your “Current Health Score”. Along with the current health score, we give you a detailed plan to reach your “target health score”.

We provide personalized preventive healthcare solutions based on the patient’s DNA and take into consideration:

– A person’s age

– Gender

– Medical profile including current health conditions, medications, environmental factors

– Dietary choices

– Lifestyle choices

– Routine blood work

This helps in providing a 360-degree Preventive Healthcare strategy for our clients. Visit our clinic and speak to our experienced team of doctors.
